Filip Verneert is Master of Science (MSc) in Educational Studies (KU Leuven) an did a postgraduate program in Systems Therapy (KU Leuven) and studied guitar at the Jazz department of the Music Conservatory in Brussels.
For 10 years I was director of MuziekMozaïek Folk & Jazz vzw, for which I made numerous jazz and folk projects. I was the founder and conductor of the Home Cookin’ Big Band and The Ghent Youth Jazz Orchestra. I’m chief editor of the flemish magazine Jazz & Mo (Jazzandmo.be) and president of the B-Jazz International Contest (former Jazz Hoeilaart). I work with the Youth Jazz Collective, together with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, a high level youth bigband. With my good friend trumpeter Rudy Reunes (+) we started the To Be Or Not To Be (BOP) Band (a live program about the history of Jazz). This resuted in the publication of a book (De JazzBoom) about Jazz listening and history.
I am currently working as a PhD researcher and teaching at LUCA School of Arts – KU Leuven, research unit Music & Drama. My research includes improvisation, music education, collaborative creativity and community music.
These last years I’m mainly playing with my Quartet (Filip Verneert & Enrique Simón Quartet). Melodic jazz, with roots in the classical music and original compositions. In 2016 we recorded our first CD, ‘Meeting Patricia’, as a duo and in 2020 ‘Lucentum’ in Quartet with French double bass player Gil Lachenal and Spanish drummer Pedro Vazquez Martinez.
With famous New Orleans pianist and singer Nobert Detaeye and trumpet player Bruno Van Acoleyen, a new trio (New Orleans Impressions) was made in 2020. Beside that I’m still playing in trio with different musicians, as much as possible!
In the past I played actively with a.o. the Ilse Duyck Group (Ilse Duyck: vocals/composer, Bert Candries: bass, Paul Flush: piano and Luc Vanden Bosch: drums) and the lindyhop-swingband The Smoky Midnight Gang. With singer Viona Westra we wrote and played several musical theater productions, including “And the cat came back’ about South Africa and apartheid and ‘Nickels for METI’, about the life of Berthold Brecht.
I’ve got the opportunity to play and record with (a.o.): Jan De Haas (dr), Bart Maris (tp), Myriam Fuks (voc), Marijn De Valck (voc), Bruno Deneckere (voc), Filip the Fleurquin (voc ), Will Tura (voc), Dirk Van Esbroeck (voc/git), John Snauwaert (sax), Sammy Rimington (clar), Mahabub Khan (voc, tabla), Rony Verbiest (acc), Lady Linn (voc), Rebecca Valejo (voc), Roni Ben-Hur (git), Nilson Matta (bass), Norbert Detaeye (piano).
