Filip Verneert is Doctor in the Arts (KU Leuven), Master of Science in Educational Studies (KU Leuven), did a postgraduate program in Psychotherapy – Systems Therapy, followed a baccalaureate in Philosophy (KU Leuven) and studied guitar at the Jazz department of the Music Conservatory in Brussels.
Filip is director of MuziekMozaïek Folk & Jazz vzw, chief editor of the flemish magazine Jazz&Mo’ (Jazzandmo.be) and president of the B-Jazz International Contest (former Jazz Hoeilaart), an international contest and network for young musicians In association with the St. Louis College of Music (Rome) and the Gexto Jazz Festival (Bilbao).
As a PhD researcher he is working at the Music Education dept. of LUCA School of Arts – KU Leuven. His research includes improvisation, music education, collaborative creativity and community music.
Filip is a member of the Ethno Committee, a global steering committee that ensures that the Ethno program develops in a sustainable, positive and democratic way. As a researcher he is affiliated with the SIMM (Social Impact of Music Making) platform and the Centre for Social Action & Music Making (CESAMM – Academic Chair Jonet University of Ghent).
On a performance level Filip is mainly playing with his Quartet (Filip Verneert & Enrique Simón Quartet). Melodic jazz, with roots in the classical music and original compositions. In 2016 they recorded their first CD, ‘Meeting Patricia’, as a duo and in 2020 ‘Lucentum’ in Quartet with French double bass player Gil Lachenal and Spanish drummer Pedro Vazquez Martinez. With famous New Orleans pianist and singer Norbert Detaeye and trumpet player Bruno Van Acoleyen, a new trio (New Orleans Impressions) started in 2020.
In the past Filip played actively with a.o. the Ilse Duyck Group (Ilse Duyck: vocals/composer, Bert Candries: bass, Paul Flush: piano and Luc Vanden Bosch: drums) and the lindyhop-swingband The Smoky Midnight Gang. With singer Viona Westra he played several musical theater productions, including “And the cat came back’ about South Africa and apartheid and ‘Nickels for METI’, about the life of Berthold Brecht.
He is founder and conductor of the Home Cookin’ Big Band and The Ghent Youth Jazz Orchestra. With his good friend trumpeter Rudy Reunes (+) he started the To Be Or Not To Be (BOP) Band (a live program about the history of Jazz). This resulted in the publication of a book (De JazzBoom) about Jazz listening and history.
